Applications and Adaptations of Dialectical Behavior Therapy

Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) is an evidence-based intervention with broad, trans-diagnostic applicability. Although originally targeted to individuals with chronic risk of suicidality or self-harming and other risky behaviors, its core skills can be applied to individuals with a range of emotional regulation challenges and other difficulties. This course will introduce you to some of the core components of DBT as well as the evidence base to support its use. You will see an in-depth illustration of how it is used and how this approach differs from traditional CBT and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT). Additionally, you will learn about the ways that DBT has been modified since its inception to address a range of specific populations and clinical challenges.
The goal of this course is to provide addictions, behavioral health counseling, marriage and family therapy, psychology, and social work professionals in health and human service settings with the skills needed to understand the foundational skills of DBT and how it can be applied in a variety of treatment settings.
This is an introductory look at the basic principles and applications of DBT and that competent practice of the model requires more in-depth training.
